I took a photography class in Singapore at NUS, something I've been waiting to do since freshman year of college (just the photography part, not necessarily at NUS). For one of our homework assignments, we were tasked to go to Little India, a neighborhood in Singapore that is frequented by the migrant worker community. I did ample research beforehand, terrified of the prospect of going up to random people and asking to take their picture. I eventually landed on the Banglar Kantha, a Bengali newspaper (the only in Singapore).
The editor graciously let me photograph Masud, a migrant worker who plays his harmonium in the office on weekends and whenever he gets off work, and I did my best to listen to his story and translate that into my pictures. This particular photo was actually selected to be a finalist for UNC's Global Photography Competition (yayyy).
